Why We Love Breckenridge
We live in Colorado, so we have an amazing selection of great vacation spots that are close to home. One of our favorite ways to spend a few days is going up to Breckenridge. This town is a great place to visit no matter the season but our favorite is to have our adventures in fall in Breckenridge. The Aspen trees are golden and there is a little chill in the air, making our hikes even more enjoyable. We love the food, cute shops, and incredible food in this charming town.
Choosing a Place to Stay
For our latest visit, we spent a weekend in Breckenridge to enjoy some beautiful scenery and some recharge time after what felt like a busy year for us. We decided to rent this Airbnb, close to town so that we could walk many places, and was right on the river. It was one of the better Airbnbs that we have stayed at in Breckenridge and I will try to rent this place again on our next visit.
Something to remember if you are visiting in a warmer month is that most places up in the mountains in Colorado don’t have air conditioning, so open windows and fans are what you have to work with if it gets super hot. It doesn’t happen very often that those things aren’t enough but we did have one summer visit where it was a little too hot for comfort. If you are on a budget, staying outside of town can be more affordable. We like the Hampton Inn & Suites in Silverthorne for a more classic hotel stay.
How We Spent our First Day in Breckenridge
I am a huge coffee fan and on vacation have been known to stop a couple of times at a coffee shop in a day, so that is usually how we start our days out. Breckenridge has quite a few coffee shops for being such a small town but my favorite is The Crown, it has amazing pastries and their coffee is really good. The other place that Randy prefers is Cabin Coffee Co, it’s pretty good too.
On to our fall adventures in Breckenridge, we stopped at The Crown for coffee and pastries, and then we were off to our hike. There are a ton of hikes in the area but I chose this one because of the old mining building that you could see on the hike. It is the B&B to Reiling Dredge to Minnie Mine, a 2.9-mile loop that is an intermediate-level hike. We passed by beautiful trees, around 4 old mining buildings, and a lake as well as climbed a bit in altitude, so the top of the trail was pretty amazing. This hike is probably one of my favorites in Breckenridge, so many varied things to see, it was really cool.
After the hike, we went back to our Airb&b to get cleaned up and to go to our fancy dinner. We had reservations at Hearthstone, a farm-to-table restaurant housed in a 125-year-old Victorian house. This place has impeccable service, unbelievable food, and an awesome atmosphere. I had scallops with yuzu rice and Randy had the steak with garlic mashed potatoes and for dessert, we had sticky toffee pudding. I highly recommend going here, make a reservation and go, you will not regret it, it is the best place we have eaten in Breckenridge.
How We Spent our Second Day in Breckenridge
The next day we spent walking around the charming downtown, with coffee of course! We stopped at the art gallery, visited all of the local shops, and as well as stopped by the river and relaxed for a while. It was so refreshing after our year of crazy to have a moment to stop and relax. For lunch, we went to Whiskey Star Smokehouse and it was good BBQ, Randy smokes meat and we have been to BBQ places all over the US and this one was pretty solid. We also stopped at the small batch ice cream shop, Higgles Ice Cream Shop, and got some tasty ice cream. I love this place because their flavors are always changing and always unique, it is a great way to spend part of your day.
We ended up having dinner at Pho Real and to be honest, it was a pretty sad bowl of Pho, I would skip this and go somewhere else. We spent the evening walking around the river and then went to grab drinks and fries at Ollie’s Pub & Grub Breck. The FRIES WERE SO DELICIOUS! I am still thinking about those fries! The wings and drinks were good as well, be sure to sit outside and enjoy being on the water.
Our Last Day in Breckenridge and Surrounding Areas
The next day was the end of our fall adventures in Breckenridge and we had to head back down the mountain but we made our usual stop in Frisco for breakfast at the Butterhorn. They have scratch-made baked goods and put their benedict on a croissant and it is always delicious. After breakfast, we walk around the main street for a little bit and then head home.
