1 | See the Dazzling Christmas Markets in Europe

Experiencing the dazzling Christmas markets in Europe is truly a holiday delight. Cities like Vienna, Strasbourg, and Budapest turn into magical winter wonderlands where you can experience traditional crafts, try festive foods, and take part in fun holiday activities.

For a unique way to take in these markets, try a river cruise with AmaWaterways or Viking. These cruises let you visit the best Christmas markets in Europe along the Danube or Rhine, all while providing a relaxing experience by avoiding the hassle of having to unpack and pack every day.

AmaWaterWays Christmas Market Cruise

Step into a world of enchantment with AmaWaterways on their unforgettable Christmas market cruises. AmaWaterways offers a luxurious experience, featuring small ships and carefully curated included excursions that let you fully immerse yourself in the holiday magic.

Some of the featured ports include Vienna, where you can visit many of the festive markets, and Strasbourg, where you can explore the oldest and largest Christmas market in France. No matter if you’re looking for handmade gifts to take home or trying fun local foods, these cruises will create magical Christmas memories for you and your family!

Viking Christmas Market Cruise

Looking for an adults-only Christmas cruise through Europe? Experience the festive magic of Europe with Viking on their captivating Christmas market cruises. Enjoy elegant modern amenities on a smaller intimate ship as you explore some of Europe’s most charming destinations. Some of the featured ports include Amsterdam, where you can visit the market and take in the light festival, and Nuremberg, where you can explore the biggest and oldest Christmas market in Germany.

They also have an itinerary that includes a visit to Cologne, where the stunning cathedral provides a breathtaking backdrop to one of Germany’s most famous Christmas markets. Viking’s thoughtfully designed itineraries ensure you experience the best Christmas markets in Europe for the best vacation!

If you want to avoid some of the holiday crowds, try A Taste of Christmas Markets cruise in November or January.

The magic doesn’t stop at the markets. You can ice skate on Vienna’s grand Rathausplatz, explore the historic castles of the Rhine, or warm up in Budapest’s famous thermal baths. If you need help planning your custom itinerary for your Christmas vacation to Europe, I can help!

If you are more interested in a land-based vacation to explore the markets, there are tons of great options! Two great choices to consider staying at are the opulent Hotel Sacher in Vienna and the elegant Four Seasons Gresham Palace in Budapest. Both offer comfortable luxury, perfect for unwinding after a festive day out. Whether you’re searching for unique gifts or just soaking up the holiday spirit, Europe’s Christmas markets are a magical way to experience the holiday season.

Whether you plan to experience Europe’s Christmas markets by river cruise or a traditional stay, you won’t be disappointed by the wonderful things there are to do to celebrate the holiday season!

2 | Cruise the Spectacular Caribbean

With warm weather and stunning views, a Caribbean cruise is a fantastic choice for a sunnier way to celebrate the holiday season. Not only do you get to visit beautiful tropical destinations, but the cruise lines offer a variety of festive activities, entertainment, and holiday-focused food and drinks. The best part? You get to explore multiple places without the hassle of packing and unpacking over and over again. Plus, there’s nothing quite like celebrating Christmas by relaxing on a beautiful beach!

Cruising is also a great way to celebrate a large family gathering, as everyone can have their own space while having plenty of opportunities to gather together!

Great Cruise Lines to Consider During the Holidays:

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean goes all-out to ensure a festive atmosphere on their ships. On the ship, they have beautifully decorated Christmas trees and holiday-themed performances. They also offer gingerbread house-making competitions, carolers singing classic holiday tunes, and even meetings with Santa Claus. Royal Caribbean also offers special holiday menus featuring traditional dishes, so you won’t miss having a traditional Christmas dinner while on your vacation!

Disney Cruise

Disney Cruise Line transforms their ships into a winter wonderland during the holiday season. With their Very Merrytime cruises, Disney brings the magic of the holidays to the high seas. On the ship, they have everything from Mickey and Minnie in festive attire to enchanting holiday decor throughout the ship. Festive activities offered include themed crafts, holiday parties, and an incredible tree-lighting ceremony. Plus, you are celebrating Christmas with the Mouse. Does it get more magical than that?!

Virgin Voyages

If you are looking for an adults-only holiday celebration, check out Virgin Voyages for a laid-back, yet festive time at sea! On this cruise, they have stylish decor, a lively, fun atmosphere, and some of the best food at sea. Enjoy live entertainment, themed events, and amazing places for some relaxation. With their innovative dining options, you and your party can savor holiday meals with a twist, surrounded by the beauty of the ocean.

Benefits of Taking a Cruise over the Holidays

  1. Holiday-themed activities and entertainment: Cruise lines pull out all the stops with Christmas tree lighting ceremonies, caroling, Santa Claus visits, and festive holiday shows. There’s something for everyone to enjoy!
  2. Delicious food and drinks: Indulge in a variety of dining options, from elegant restaurants to casual buffets and snack bars. You’ll find everything from traditional Christmas dishes to delicious international cuisine.
  3. Multiple destinations: One of the best parts of cruising is visiting multiple destinations without the hassle of packing and unpacking your luggage. See and do more with ease!
  4. Relaxation: Cruises are perfect for relaxing and unwinding, especially during the busy Christmas season. Enjoy the ship’s amenities like the pool, spa, and fitness center, or simply kick back on your balcony and soak.

3 | Experience the Magic of Walt Disney World

Disney World is one of the most magical places to visit during the Christmas season, making it one of my favorites during the holidays! The parks are decorated with twinkling lights and festive decorations, and they offer tons of festive events and activities from the end of November into the New Year. There are plenty of amazing sights and activities to make lasting holiday memories! If you want help planning the most magical Christmas vacation to Disney World, I can help!

One of the most popular Christmas events at Disney World is Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. This ticketed event takes place at Magic Kingdom Park on select nights throughout the holiday season. During the party, you can enjoy special holiday parades, fireworks, shows, and meet-and-greets with Disney characters. Plus, there are delicious seasonal treats and unique merchandise available only during the event.

Another popular holiday event is the EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays. One highlight of the festival is the Candlelight Processional, which features a choir and orchestra performing traditional Christmas music, with a different celebrity narrator throughout the festival for the event. You can also enjoy special holiday meals and snacks at one of the many restaurants and Holiday Kitchens located in the World Showcase area of EPCOT. Additionally, you can explore the holiday traditions celebrated by the various countries represented in the park.

A highlight for me is seeing Cinderella’s castle beautifully illuminated by the spectacular light show. On Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party nights, they have the Minnie’s Wonderful Christmastime Fireworks, and it is spectacular. Throughout the holiday season, there’s also the Frozen Holiday Surprise, featuring Elsa, Anna, Olaf, and Kristoff in their holiday looks in front of Cinderella Castle. In this fun show, Elsa transforms the castle with sparkling finishes that shine all evening long!

If you are looking for a slower time to visit Walt Disney World, but still want to experience the holiday fun, try going the week after Thanksgiving.

Visiting Disney World at Christmas is truly enchanting, bringing the holiday magic to life in ways you’ll never forget. With dazzling decorations, festive light shows, unique holiday events, and special character meet-and-greets, the entire park is full of Christmas cheer. The mix of Disney magic and holiday spirit creates memories that will last a lifetime. If you’re looking for a magical holiday getaway, Disney World at Christmas is the place to be!

The Limelight Hotel Aspen

For a more intimate and boutique experience, check out the Limelight Hotel Aspen. This hotel is located in downtown Aspen, and has spacious rooms, a lively nighttime scene, and complimentary breakfast.

Things to Do During your Christmas Vacation in Aspen

While Aspen is renowned for its world-class skiing, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy. Go on a snowshoeing adventure through the picturesque Maroon Bells, where you can see stunning views of snow-capped peaks and frozen lakes. Afterward, you can indulge in a bit of retail therapy along Aspen’s historic Main Street, where you’ll find tons of cute boutiques and art galleries.

Be sure to stop at Maroon Bells! It is one of the most breathtaking places to visit.

If you’re looking for some of Aspen’s cultural scene, be sure to visit the Aspen Art Museum, where you can view contemporary art from around the world. No visit to Aspen would be complete without experiencing the town’s legendary après-ski scene, so head to the Red Onion or Ajax Tavern for a festive cocktail by the fireplace.

Aspen truly comes alive during the Christmas season, with its charming streets decorated with twinkling lights and festive decorations. Whether you’re wanting to spend your whole vacation on the slopes or take time to explore the town’s fun cultural scene, Aspen has something for everyone!

5 | Bask in the Warmth of Cancun

Some of the best Christmas destinations for a tropical getaway are visiting the stunning landscapes of Cancun and Riviera Maya. Picture yourself unwinding on sun-kissed beaches, surrounded by lively culture and endless opportunities for adventure. Experience the festive magic of Christmas as gentle breezes rustle the palm trees and the sparkling waters shimmer under the Mexican sun. Cancun and Riviera Maya are incredible destination choices for a relaxing holiday vacation for the whole family!

Moon Palace

Nestled along the pristine shores of the Caribbean Sea, Moon Palace offers a perfect blend of luxury and relaxation. They have spacious accommodations, some great dining options, and tons of fun of activities. Spend your days lounging by the pool, indulging in spa treatments, or enjoying nightly entertainment under the stars! You can check out my review of this resort here.

Things to Do During your Christmas Vacation in Cancun

Get Into the Holiday Spirit

Cancun decks the halls like no other during Christmas! Everywhere you turn, you’ll find twinkling lights, festive decorations, and towering Christmas trees adding a magical touch to the atmosphere. Plus, there are special events like tree lighting ceremonies, caroling sessions, and even visits from Santa Claus himself to keep the festive vibes going strong.

Soak Up the Sun on the Beach

Cancun’s beaches are legendary, and they’re even more inviting during Christmas. Spend your days soaking up the sunshine, splashing in the waves, or simply lounging on the soft sands. For a bit of adventure, why not rent a boat or jet ski and explore the sparkling Caribbean waters?

Explore Ancient Wonders

Dive into history with a visit to the Mayan ruins scattered across the Yucatan Peninsula. Take a day trip to Chichen Itza, Tulum, or Coba and marvel at the impressive architecture and fascinating stories behind these ancient sites. Tours typically include a visit to a cenote and lunch at a local restaurant, as well. You can check out my thoughts on the best tour here.

Since Chichen Itza is such a popular site, I recommend taking a private tour. You get there before a lot of the crowds and you can go at your own pace!

Discover Eco-Adventures at Xcaret

Just a stone’s throw from Cancun lies Xcaret, an eco-park brimming with thrilling activities. Dive into cenotes, snorkel in underground rivers, or wander through Mayan ruins— it’s an adventure seeker’s paradise!

Tips on Planning Your Christmas Vacation

  1. Book early – Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year to travel. Book your flights and accommodations early to ensure you get the best selection and rates.
  2. Pack for all types of weather – The weather can be unpredictable during the winter months. Be sure to pack for all types of weather, including sunshine, rain, and cooler temperatures in the evening.
  3. Bring sun protection – If you are going somewhere tropical, remember to bring sunscreen, insect repellent, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun and insects. The sun is still very strong, even in the winter months. Bring sunscreen & sunglasses wherever you’re going to protect against snow burns!
  4. Christmas travel is popular – You should expect crowds at the airport, tourist attractions, and in restaurants.
