Day One | Exploring Main Street and the Blue River
Shopping on Main Street and Relaxing at Riverwalk Plaza
Start your day by exploring the charming Main Street, definitely grab a coffee before exploring the shops at The Crown – don’t forget to check out their amazing pastries too.
Main Street is where you will find great locally owned shops, art from local artisans, as well as restaurants. Plan on taking a break from shopping and enjoy the Riverwalk Plaza, strolling by the Blue River or enjoy a book by the water. There are tons of great shops with all sorts of things to look at and purchase! We recommend wandering for a bit and then getting some ice cream at Higgles. Higgles has small batch, homemade ice cream with rotating flavors and we think it’s the best ice cream in Breckenridge!
Our top pick for Higgles if they have it when your visiting is the Parent Trap – Vanilla ice cream with Oreos & a peanut butter swirl!
After ice cream take a walk on some of the paths along the Riverwalk Plaza or bringing a blanket to relax by the river. The Breckenridge Welcome Center History Museum & Theater has some great information on the history of Breckenridge and is free -also it has public restrooms! A couple of our favorite shops on Main Street are Marigolds Farmhouse Funk & Junk shop and Raitman Art Galleries.
Spend the Evening Enjoying Great Food in Breckenridge
For dinner, enjoy a delicious meal at one of Breckenridge’s many excellent restaurants. I recommend Whiskey Star Smokehouse for a casual meal, they serve Texas Style BBQ. We really liked the brisket chili and mac n cheese. If it’s nice outside, choose the sit on the patio – great views, fun people watching and delicious food, what could be better!
Or if you want something more upscale, go to Hearthstone, they specialize in farm-to-table Colorado cuisine. The food, service, and ambiance was the highlight of our trip when we went here. You really can’t go wrong with any of the dishes here but we enjoyed the scallops and the English sticky toffee pudding.
Day Two | Hiking to Find Fall Colors in Breckenridge
Spend the day enjoying the beautiful outdoors with a hike hunting for fall foliage in Breckenridge. Grab some filling breakfast to fuel up for your hike, we like the Blue Moose Restaurant. They have tasty breakfast burritos and cinnamon rolls. There are some great hikes in Breckenridge that can be found here, at all hiking levels, lots of great options for everyone!
We did the B&B to Reiling Drege to Minnie Mine hike, a 2.9 mile loop that takes you by some awe inspiring views as well as some cool old ruins. There were amazing sweeping views of Summit Valley as well as tons of great fall color. This hike is a pretty easy hike but the cool changing views and the old mining building were fun to see on the hike.
**I do want to warn travelers, Altitude sickness is no joke, PLEASE take some time to acclimate to the higher Altitude and drink tons of water** This is my water bottle of choice because of it’s great insulation and lid that has a cap on it, so if you drop it you still have a way to drink from it without the dirt. Check out our Colorado essentials list here.

Check Out a Restaurant on the Water and Try to Escape an Escape Room
After freshening up after hiking, go enjoy eating al fresco at Ollie’s Pub & Grub Breck, the views are amazing and don’t miss out on their delicious fries and wings. Take a stroll after dinner or try to make your escape in one of 3 rooms at Mountain Time Escape Rooms.
Day Three | Finding the Troll or Exploring Frisco
Head Over to the Neighbor Town of Frisco
On your last day, take a scenic drive to one of the nearby towns, such as Frisco or Silverthorne. We love to spend our last morning eating at the Butterhorn in Frisco, the eggs benedict is served on a fresh made croissant and their pastry case is mouthwatering. This place is worth the wait! If the wait is long, there is a bookstore and coffee shop across the street to help you pass the time.
After a hearty breakfast, take a walk through the Frisco Historic Park & Museum. They have a cool museum on the history of Frisco as well as some historic buildings in the park you can walk through and see how life used to be in Frisco. My kids loved this stop, getting to explore old building and run around a park was the perfect end to our weekend exploring the area. I loved it too, getting to learn about the people and the history of the area was really cool.
Or Find the Troll and Have Brunch
Alternatively, you can spend some time relaxing at your hotel or rental property – see below for some of our recommendations on where to stay! Then grab some brunch at the Columbine Café – don’t miss out on the pork green chili!
After breakfast, check out the Breckenridge Troll and wander through the golden aspens a little bit before heading home. Whatever you do, make sure you take the time to stop to check out all lots of the beautiful colors while you explore the fall in Breckenridge!
If you’re looking for a fall getaway that will leave you feeling refreshed and inspired, Breckenridge is the perfect destination.
Hotels For your Fall in Breckenridge Getaway
There are tons of great places to stay in Breckenridge – from big hotels to Airbnbs! In the fall, we like to stay close to Main Street so we can walk everywhere pretty easy and we don’t have to look for parking everyday. Here are our top choices:
Gravity Haus – This hotel is at the end of Main Street so it is a little quieter and has a great coffee shop & restaurant in it. They also have a fun community space, so if you are heading there with a group it is nice to be able to hang out all together at the hotel.
Residence Inn by Marriott Breckenridge – This hotel is also on Main Street and has great walkablity. This one is pet friendly, has amazing views from the hot tub and has free breakfast. They also have a great outdoor seating area with a firepit – perfect for hanging out after a day exploring the town!
Water House on Main street by TO – This is 2 bedroom apartment rental that has a balcony and access to a pool and hot tub on Main street. If you are traveling with a family or another couple, this is a great choice! The extra room and privacy are great and you can still have everything be walkable is a nice perk! I love having morning coffee with awesome views from the balcony!
With plenty of activities to choose from, breathtaking views, and welcoming locals, it’s no wonder this charming town is a favorite among travelers. Hope you enjoy this 3 day fall foliage itinerary in Breckenridge.
